Team Liquid retires from Rocket League competition!

Among all the announcements regarding esport, those coming from structures closing their doors or retiring from competitions have become more and more frequent these past few years. This trend can be explained by the hardening of the esports’ ecosystem, particularly in terms of economy.

Although new actors, such as football star Lionel Messi or tennis player Daniil Medvedev have started investing in esports structures, some iconic clubs are facing harsh financial difficulties. It is the case of Team Liquid’s Rocket League branch. Despite a rather honorable season 2023 - one victory and one second place in RCLS - the Dutch club announced their retirement from this competitive circuit.

In their announcement, Team Liquid detailed their reasons. The structure claims that the pro-scene put together by developer Psyonix is not financially reliable and points out a “win or bust” model. In other words, a Rocket League team needs frequent victories to stay alive.

Besides, the lack of sponsoring and of commitment from digital actors make the esports circuits lack attraction and profitability for its clubs. Team Liquid did leave the door open to a possible comeback, if and when the Rocket League system improves its business model for the well-being of all teams.
